Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, an American artist and rapper. Queen Latifah's performance in television and music has resulted in her receiving an Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award six additional Grammy nominations an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah's parents are Lancelot and Rita Owens. Both were police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who taught the class at Irvington High School. The couple split at the age of Latifah, then ten years aged, was 10 years old. Latifah grew up in the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Her stage name Latifah is a reference to delicate and kind in Arabic was given by her cousin at the age of she was eight. Latifah was a 5'10" tall forward on the team at her high school, was always a tall girl. The song she performed was "Home" from The Wiz in a performance at her highschool. Latifah began beatboxing with the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah used to be a member of the Flavor Unit - a group of rappers that gathered around the producer, DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James aka the 45 King, made a recording of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He emailed the recorded to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song, and then made a deal with Latifah in 1988 to release her first single Wrath of My Madness.
